Europe- Fall 2007:
After removing our Halloween make-up from Pam Jam’s Phabulous Halloween Freak
Out at the Last Concert Cafe in our thrifty hotel room, we napped. The trip to Holland
starts in a few hours, you know? (excuse the snide side here but, one might think with
the TSA safety regulations & prohibitions on bringing even water on board that airlines
might get hip to how to feed a vegan when you advertise you can do so...one would be
woefully wrong...and hungry!)
Cole El-Saleh, Michael “Lefty” Lefkowitz, & I made it in to Amsterdam & soon didn’t care
about many petty things. Just pretty things...like digging the scenery, finding a hotel,
(thanks Jan) walking forever (yay!) & some of us getting over our jet lag in a nice legal
coffeeshop. The next day we are ready to travel to Hoorn. PeTiCantus put together our
return sell out show at the amazing Huis Verloren. Butch regaled us with stories of the
Huis’ history. I must write more about that soon! (ask me about the 8 day cowboy clock
sometime, or the church adorned with Unicorns) Regio 22 shot some footage of our
concert & did an interview for North West Netherlands TV broadcast in a segment called “Music in the Backyard” You can see all 7 minutes of it in context at www.regio22.nl
Next we played a very fun private party out in the beautiful countryside. (We actually
drove up to the wrong farm, waking cows more than once that evening.) Then we were
off to Amsterdam’s Cantine for a nice afternoon set & Then off again to Leiden to play
an in-store for this really cool musicologist at his space, At the Movies. (Leiden was
beautiful...I’m going to spend more daylight hours there this May.) To Jan, Arnoud, Jan,
Peter, Kees & Tim, THANKS SO MUCH!
Scott Daniels, along with the rest of the Wonderjammers, joined Cole, Lefty & me for
WonderJam in Amsterdam. For 5 years Darren at Colorwarp has been putting this on.
This year, like the rest, was off the hook! LeeAnn Atherton & Zeegrass were stellar,
D.Brown Fisher & Speedy Sparks kicked it with Michael Hale on drums. We had great
sit ins from Patrick Brink, Jur Scherpenzeel, Jan & Ricky Van Doorn & on Friday,
Shandon Sahm sat in & everyone in the Maloe Melo Bluescafe sang along to a set of
Doug Sahm songs. It’s grand traveling with friends. We ended the week with a Peter
Rowan show at the Paradiso. My cup ranneth over with cool music, books, one sexy
top, CDs & FLOWERS galore!
Thanks for another fine birthday, y’all!
Dankuwel!
Jerry Lightfoot Tribute Video
Jerry Lightfoot (1951-2006)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvUKmCUMn38
I made this montage for the first annual Jerry Lightfoot memorial at Fitzgerald’s in Houston Nov 18, (this year benefitting Jerry’s great friend, & Texas music legend, Texas Pete Mayes) Included are pics of Jerry Lightfoot with (in order of appearance) Lonnie Mack, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Texas Johnny Brown, Joe “Guitar” Hughes, Sparetime Murray, Pete Mayes, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Trudy Lynn, Jerry LaCroix, me, Vince Welnick, Barry “Frosty” Smith, Larry Fulcher, John X. Reed, & cover art by JFKLN. The music is Jerry’s “Never Get Caught Again” from his CD “Better Days” into “Around and Between” from “Texastentialism” If this takes too long for you, there’s a lo-res version at youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvUKmCUMn38 (or search Jerry Lightfoot on youtube or myspace tv) I will always treasure my time in the Jerry Lightfoot Band of Wonder...I will always treasure each lesson taught by such a great man.
The band has played some very fun shows in Austin! We had the thrill of playing the grand re-opening of the Austin Music Hall with Del Castillo, Bobbie Nelson, (check out her new CD!!!)
Nakia and his Southern Cousins, and Kacy Crowley on Monday,
Nov 26. We were greeted by men and women in hard hats.
(They just secured permits that afternoon) The show was a hoot! All money raised goes to the SIMS & HAAM foundations.
Another damn good time was held at Antone’s Saturday Dec 1.
We opened for Asleep at the Wheel & then I had the honor of sitting in with the Wheel on “Judgment Day Blues”. It was a parade of talent with folks like Paul Shaffer (David Letterman’s Band Leader), Bobbie Nelson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore & Billy Gibbons all jamming with AATW. Heck, there was even core-E-ography involved! Get down, RAY!
